Pre-K4 Academic Curriculum
Highlights
In addition to the Academic Pre-K4 (PreSchool - 4 year olds) curriculum above, below are other activities that are taught throughout the year. The children are also included in all school-wide activities like Field Day, NUT (No Uniform Today) days, Pizza Mondays, Frozen Yogurt Days, Pep Rally, Christmas and Spring Concerts, as well as learning to care for our community via service projects.
Author of the Month – each month a children’s book author is chosen and books by that author are read. Projects/activities relating to one of the author’s books is displayed on the Author of the Month bulletin board.
Alphabet Book – as letters are introduced, the children evolve a book where they create a picture related to the letter and write about that letter. This starts them on reading by learning to read their book creations.
Theme related “Backpack”– this is a take home project rotating one child at a time that enhance our lessons in Science and LA. As an example, if the theme for the year is animals, the child becomes a “zoologist” for the week. They pick an animal, follow the instructions in the backpack for their investigation, and then come back to the classroom where it is discussed as a class.
Insect Theme
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) projects – one project is done each month which helps enhance their thinking, creativity, and problem solving skills while learning to become familiar with the STEM process and its terms and words.
Sound Bucket– This is a bucket that aids in the learning of letter sounds. This is another take home project rotating one child at a time. As each letter is introduced, the child will take home the sound bucket where they will collect a few items that begin with the sound of that letter. The child reviews his/her findings in the form of a show and tell.
Specials– Every week the children are taught by our Specialist Teachers in the following subjects:
Themed Days– Throughout the year there are days devoted to seasonal or just fun activities. Examples include nature walks, game days, Halloween parade, outdoor snow day, rug ice skating, butterfly release day, and field day.
